The Covington Athletic Department and the Buccaneer football program have some special plans for the annual scrimmage "Jamboree" against Versailles on Friday, August 20th - plans that will bring back memories of years gone by and hopefully increase anticipation for the 2010 football season.
First, the Athletic Department and Buccaneer coach Dave Miller want to honor the 1960 football team that finished 10-0 and set a school scoring record with 578 points fifty years ago. Miller is inviting all players and coaches from that legendary team to escort his 2010 team onto the field prior to the varsity scrimmage. Team members from the 1960 Buccaneers are encouraged to meet the current team at 7:00pm at the east side of the locker rooms. The 1960 players will also be introduced at halftime of the varsity scrimmage.
"In the sixty-three years of Covington football, the 1960 teams ranks at the top of the heap with the 1973 team," said Miller. "It's been fifty years and their records have never been broken. I want these kids (the current team) to understand what it means to be a part of this tradition and what better way to do that than to bring in the guys who lived it? It would be a great honor for our coaching staff and our kids to have those guys (the 1960 team) escort us onto the field."
Second, Miller would like every former Covington football player to form a tunnel for the team to run through prior to the scrimmage. Ideally, he'd also like everyone to wear their football jerseys, if possible.
"It's very important to us that we recognize the guys who paved the way for our current group of kids," said Miller. "A lot of these kids have fathers, grandfathers and uncles who played football at Covington, so it's not only a tradition in the community, but a family tradition. It's truly special. We want all the alumni football players to feel a part of our family and we invite them to participate by forming a tunnel."
Lastly, and definitely not least, a dedication ceremony will take place prior to the varsity scrimmage - where the new 25 second clocks will be dedicated to the memory of former Buccaneer player and coach Doug Swartz and his family.
"We want this to be a special night," Miller said. "Dedicating the clocks to Doug Swartz is a fitting way for us to honor his memory. He meant so much to so many people."
The football parents are also selling chicken dinner tickets "Presale" for the game. Tickets must be purchased by August 10th ($7) from any Covington High School football player. The football parents will also be selling 50/50 tickets as well.
It's going to be a memorable night in Covington.
