LOTS OF WORK TO BE DONE...
In the final week before the regular season opener the Covington Buccaneers will address the mistakes made in a humbling scrimmage at Anna.

AUGUST 18, 2017 - ANNA
Coming off of a quality scrimmage against Eaton, the Covington Buccaneers traveled to Anna looking see how far they've come from a week of practice and hopefully build some momentum heading into next Friday's season opener at St. Henry.

And what the Buccaneers learned after three varsity quarters and one quarter of JV action was there is a lot of work to be done before making the trek to Mercer County next week.

That's because Anna basically scored on all but two of its possessions in the first two quarters in building a 41-6 advantage. Once Covington intercepted a Rocket pass and the other possession being a kneel down by Anna to end the half.

Covington started the scrimmage with its lone varsity touchdown on its third offensive play. After a short run by senior Ethan Herron and a quick strike from sophomore quarterback Cade Schmelzer to sophomore Andrew Cates for a first down, senior Ty Freeman found a crease down the left sideline for a 55-yard score to put Covington up 6-0.

But Anna struck quickly on its opening possession, needing just four plays to reach pay dirt on a long touchdown run.

After Covington failed to move the ball on its next possession, the Rockets scored quickly again on a long touchdown run to push its lead to 14-6.

The Buccaneers then were forced to punt again after a sack on third-and short, but the defense was able to give the ball right back to the offense as Ty Freeman stepped in front of an Anna pass for the interception.

Unfortunately Covington couldn't take advantage of the theft as Anna picked off a Buccaneer pass two plays later and scored shortly thereafter on yet another long touchdown run.

Things snowballed from there for the Buccaneers as Anna scored three more times in the first half to build a comfortable 41-6 lead.

The third quarter began with both teams mixing in backups with their varsity units as the score remained 41-6 at the end of the varsity portion of the scrimmage.

The junior varsity squads took the field in the fourth quarter and the Buccaneer youngsters outscored Anna 12-6.

First, it was the Buccaneer defense putting points on the board as sophomore linebacker Gage Kerrigan was in the right place at the right time to recover a Rocket fumble in the end zone.

After Anna responded with a time consuming scoring drive, freshman Duncan Cooper broke free through the heart of the Anna defense for a long touchdown run to cap the evening with the scoreboard reading 47-18 in favor of the Rockets.

For Covington, it returns tomorrow morning for the unpleasant task of reviewing the film and addressing the mistakes from a humbling evening of football.

The key for the Buccs will be how well the kids take to the coaching they receive in preparation for the season opener at St. Henry.
