BUCCS EARN POST-SEASON HONORS...
Several Buccaneer football players earned recognition at the conference, district and state levels after outstanding performances in 2017.

DECEMBER 4, 2017 - COVINGTON
Several Buccaneer football players earned post-season honors recently for outstanding performances on the football field in 2017.

The Buccaneers, who finished 5-5 on the season, had nine players earn league honors voted on by the coaches in the Cross County Conference. Five players were first-team selections, while one was voted to the second-team and three were named honorable mention in the league.

Five Buccaneers earned recognition at the district level with four players gaining first-team recognition and one more being selected honorable mention by the Southwest District.

The Buccaneers also were recognized at the state level with senior Joe Schmelzer leading the way as a second-team All-Ohio selection on defense. Seniors Ty Freeman, Zach Parrett and Ethan Herron all were chosen as honorable mention.

JOE SCHMELZER, SENIOR
Joe Schmelzer was chosen second-team All-Ohio on defense in Division VI. Schmelzer was the anchor of the Buccaneer defense at middle linebacker as he posted team highs in tackles (113) and tackles for a loss (10). He was also second on the team with 5 quarterback sacks. Offensively, Joe rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries and had 1 catch for 7 yards. For his efforts, Joe was also voted to the First-Team Defense for both the Cross County Conference and the Southwest District.

TY FREEMAN, SENIOR
Ty Freeman was a multi-dimensional player for the Buccaneers, but his efforts on defense led to an Honorable Mention selection in the All-Ohio voting. He was also selected to the First-Team Defense by the Southwest District and the Cross County Conference as a defensive back. Defensive, Ty posted 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups and 32 tackles at corner. He was just as potent offensively at slot back as he recorded 341 yards and 3 touchdowns on 23 catches and rushed for 130 yards on 21 carries.

ETHAN HERRON, SENIOR
A four-year letterman, Ethan Herron earned All-Ohio honorable mention recognition as a defensive back and First-Team recognition by the Southwest District at running back. He also was named to the First-Team Defense by the coaches in the Cross County Conference. Offensively Ethan led Covington in rushing with 821 yards and 7 touchdowns on 150 carries and recorded 92 receiving yards on 10 receptions. Defensively he tallied 64 tackles, 1 sack, 3 tackles for a loss, 2 pass breakups, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Ethan was also 27-for-30 on point-after attempts as the Buccaneer kicker.

ZACH PARRETT, SENIOR
If there was a big play needed by the offense, Zach Parrett was usually the one who came through in the clutch. For his efforts he was chosen Honorable Mention All-Ohio as a wideout after leading the Buccs in receiving yards (500), catches (36) and touchdown receptions (4). Zach was also a talented defensive back for the Buccaneers as he posted 45 tackles, led the team with 6 pass breakups and recorded 1 interception. Zach was also named to the First-Team Offense in both the Southwest District and Cross County Conference selections.

CADE SCHMELZER, SOPHOMORE
Only a sophomore, Cade Schmelzer had a magical year in his first season as the Buccaneer's quarterback. He threw for 1392 yards on 100 of 185 passing for 13 touchdowns. Cade also was third on the team in rushing with 253 yards and 4 touchdowns on 58 carries. For his efforts Cade was selected the the First-Team Offense by the Cross County Conference and Honorable Mention by the Southwest District.

PARKER DYSINGER, JUNIOR
Parker Dysinger was named Second-Team Defense by the Cross County Conference after a stellar junior season. He was second on the team in tackles (109) and tackles for a loss (9). He also had 4 sacks, 5 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble.

JESSE FISHER, SOPHOMORE
Jesse Fisher was arguably the most impactful offensive and defensive lineman on the Buccaneer roster and earned special mention in the CCC for his efforts. Defensively, Jesse recorded 53 tackles, a team-high 6 sacks, 6 tackles for a loss and 1 pass breakup.

ANDREW CATES, SOPHOMORE
Andrew was named honorable mention in the Cross County Conference after a season where he played multiple positions in all phase of the game. Offensively, Andrew caught 19 passes for 267 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for 9 yards on 4 carries. Defensively he had 53 tackles, 2 pass breakups and 1 interception.

GAGE KERRIGAN, SOPHOMORE
Gage Kerrigan earned honorable mention in the CCC with a stellar effort at fullback and playing two positions on defense throughout the year (linebacker and nose tackle). Nose Tackle is where Kerrigan had a real impact as he tallied 69 tackles, 3 sacks, 7 tackles for a loss and a team-high 3 fumble recoveries. Offensively, he was second on the team with 292 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns on 51 carries.
