A NEW LOOK FOR OLD TIMES...

MAY 28, 2008 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers will have a new look in 2008, a look that combines the legendary past with the modern era of not only Covington football - but Covington athletics.

That look is a new helmet logo - a logo with the traditional "C" established in the early seventies and the "BUCCS" established in the mid-ninties.

The story behind the new logo is simple, yet in depth. It was developed to emphasize the tradition of Covington athletics and provide a source of pride for those who will be wearing the black and white for years to come.

Back in the early seventies the white "Wishbone C" was introduced on black helmets. When reviewing the history of Covington athletics, the seventies can arguably be considered the glory years - especially considering the success of the 1973 team and the 1979 state runner-up team.

If not, the glory years had to be the sixties. But that decade consisted of a variety of uniform looks - the gold helmets in the early part of the decade and the white helmets in the later part of the decade.

To completely change the look to accommodate all the colors the Buccaneer teams wore in the past wouldn't be logical, so the new logo had to become a representation of the entire tradition established over the years.

Since the first logo was the "Wishbone C", having a similar "C" was the most logical solution.

The next aspect of the logo to consider was the color and how to incorporate the more recent treatment of the word "BUCCS" into the logo.

In the late seventies and early eighties the color of the "C" was red with white trim. With the current colors of uniforms worn in a number of activities being black, white and red, the color red was essential to utilize in the logo - but only as an accent color as the official school colors are black and white.

And since black is the primary school color, white was the logical choice to use as the dominant color in the logo.

Therefore, the new logo consists of a white "C" with black and red trim to accommodate the evolution of colors established in Buccaneer uniforms over the years.

The next step was to determine what type of treatment to use for the "C" and the word "BUCCS".

The initial thought was to go with the traditional "Wishbone C" with the word "BUCCS" inscribed smaller inside the letter, but the logo appeared outdated and without a contemporary feel.

Plus, the "Wishbone C" is overused throughout the country - most notably by the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Bears. Developing a more original "C" was more logical.

After several revisions, an oval "C" with the word "BUCCS" inscribed evenly inside the letter gave the logo a contemporary, yet traditional look.

So that's the story behind the new logo, which is now on the resurfaced gym floor and will be on the Buccaneer helmets in 2008 and hopefully years to come.

It bridges the gap between the past, the present and the future - a future of pride in being a Covington Buccaneer.

Since the mid-ninties, the logo on the helmet looked like the one upcoming senior Cookie Long and the Buccs wore last year.
