MARCH 1, 2008 - KENTON
Covington senior Jake Wise has set some lofty goals for himself in the upcoming track season. He hopes to challenge the school record in the discuss and make the trip to Columbus later this spring for the state track meet.
"I want to break the school record and get to state," Jake said. "I've thought about it for a long time and this (year) is my last chance."
In order to give himself a chance to reach those goals, Jake has been working out at Larry Pacifico's gym in Vandalia since December in order to improve his strength and flexibility for the event.
"Larry has helped me get stronger," he said. "I haven't thrown yet at full motion, but I've worked on my form from a standing position. I'm throwing in the 150s just standing flat footed. That's farther than I threw all of last year in competition."
Jake's hard work is paying off even before track season has even started. This past weekend he placed sixth in the State Powerlifting Championships in the 210 pound weight class. It was his first ever lifting competition and his total lifting weight was 1140 pounds in combined bench, squat and dead lift.
"It was pretty neat (competing at state)," described Jake. "I've never done it (a lifting competition) before, so it was different. I thought I did OK, but I could have done better in the squat. If I would have squatted what I normally do, I probably would have placed third or fourth."
Still, the objective when Jake started lifting wasn't to win a powerlifting championship. It was to prepare himself for reaching a personal goal and even give himself a better chance at the collegiate level in football and track.
He was a three-year starter for the Buccs on the gridiron and has received interest from several colleges, including Wilmington, Muskegum, Marrietta and Heidelberg.
"I've talked to and visited several schools, but I haven't decided anything yet," he explained. "I like them all and C.J. (Potter) is at Wilmington, so I have some options. I'll go to a place where I can get the degree I want and have a chance to play."
With a childhood spent mostly on the farm, Jake is leaning toward biology or earth science.
"I love farming, so I'd like to get into the industry side of it - seed testing and stuff like that," he said. "I definitely want to be involved in agriculture."
In the meantime, Jake has three months left in his senior year and he hopes to make the best of it.
