Two Buccaneers received state-wide recognition this week by being All-Ohio selections by the Associated Press. Gene Studebaker, a junior, received first-team honors, while senior Logan Brown was a second-team selection.

Studebaker's performance in 2005 with nothing short of amazing when you consider he moved to a position he had never played at the high school level.

Prior to the season coach Finfrock and his staff had an idea of trying Gene at quarterback, a move questioned by many due to Studebaker's reputation as a break-away threat a running back.

Through the passing scrimmage and two full-contact scrimmages, the results were mixed as incumbent quarterback, Seth Mohler had performed very well and appeared to have matured from his sophomore season. But, Mohler suffered an injury in the final scrimmage against Versailles making the decision to hand the controls over to Studebaker an easy one.

Nobody outside of Studebaker and perhaps the coaching staff could have predicted the results as Gene flourished in his new roll. With Studebaker at the helm, the quarterback position became a tripple-threat...the run, the pitch, and the pass.

By seasons end, the Buccs had captured a share of the CCC title and reached the play-offs for the sixth time in seven years.

Along the way Studebaker broke the school single-season rushing record with 1,726 yards, passed for 809 yards, scored 25 touchdowns, threw for 8 touchdowns, and accounted for 2535 of Covington's 4418 yards of offense.

"Gene answered a lot of questions about his toughness," said Finfrock at the award's banquet. "He's truly a great athlete and a great young man."

For his performance in 2005, Studebaker was named "Back of the Year" in the CCC, All-Southwest District Offensive Player of the Year, and now First-Team All-Ohio.

Opening up holes for Studebaker and company was senior lineman Logan Brown, a First-Team offensive lineman selection by the Southwest District, "Lineman of the Year" in the CCC, and now a Second-Team All-Ohio selection.

Brown started since the eighth game of his freshman season and has built a reputation as a relentless blocker. He also established himself as a dominating force on the defensive side of the ball at Linebacker over the past three seasons.

With Brown and company opening up holes, the Buccaneer offense had two 1,000-yard rushers in Studebaker and senior Dusty Kimmel. The Buccs scored 396 points (6th all-time), 4418 total yards (3rd all-time), and 3594 rushing yards (2nd all-time).

Logan also was a terror on defense in 2005 as he recorded 90 solo tackles, 115.5 total tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 4 tackles for a loss.

Congratulations to Gene and Logan for a memorable 2005 season and your selections on the All-Ohio football team.
