For those who made the 45 minute drive south to Welcome Stadium for the annual North/South All Star Game, you got your moneys worth. The North squad, led by Northmont quarterback Tyler Horner, scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to steal a 28-23 win over the south squad.
In a three-hour affair, the game became one of the most exciting of the all star games in recent memory in the final quarter.
Sparked by the running of Chaminade-Julienne's Jevon Ringer, the South squad scored to take a 23-16 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
The North squad responded as Horner led the quick-strike offense down the field after a failed fourth down play by South with 2:30 left in the game. The Southwest Missouri State recruit connected with Springfield North's Kyle Gray for a 42-yard touchdown strike to make the score 23-22.
Covington's Matt Fulks stepped on the field with a chance to tie the score with the extra point. The kick went wide left as the South bench began to celebrate.
Fulks, a Ohio Northern recruit, went from goat to hero on the next play. A perfect onside kick bounced into a teammate's hands and the North squad had the ball back with 1:30 left in the game.
Horner took care of the rest as he hooked up with Urbana's Justin Hart over the middle for a 41-yard touchdown strike. With fourth and four, Hart somehow snuck behind the South defense as Horner put the ball only where Hart could catch it. Hart pulled the ball in without breaking stride and jogged into the end zone for the winning score, 28-23.
And, a big sigh of relief by Matt Fulks.
