If it works, why change?
Brady Reck and Jared Hague made Covington football history wearing black. They finished 40-0 in each of their four seasons of high school and now they look to begin a new tradition wearing the black helmets of Ohio Dominican.
"We're glad to have them," said Ohio Dominican Assistant coach, Chris Oliver as Brady and Jared signed on the dotted line. "We may not go 40-0 like these two did in high school, but we plan to build around our freshman. We may take it on the chin at times, but we'll win our share of games."
As they walked into the Covington High School library to officially commit to Ohio Dominican, the shirts they wore said it all, "The Tradition Begins". Ohio Dominican is starting from scratch. The 2004 season will be its first year in college football and the foundation begins with the incoming class of freshman. With Hague and Reck, the Panthers acquire two players who understand tradition and put up some spectacular numbers at the high school level.
Brady Reck led the Buccs in his junior and senior seasons with his strong, accurate right arm. As a junior, Reck completed 102 out of 173 passes for 1420 yards, 10 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. His 1420 yards set a school passing record until he surpassed that total his senior season.
As a senior, Brady shattered his school passing record by passing for 1883 yards. He completed 107 out of 236 passes for 22 touchdowns, another school record. Brady also set a single-game passing record in 2003 by throwing for 257 yards against Ansonia. Reck leaves Covington High School with 5 out of the top 6 passing games in school history.
Jared Hague was one of Reck's favorite weapons out of the tight end position. In coach Finfrock's offensive scheme, Hague was the game breaker, a rarity for a high school tight end. Jared recorded 18 catches for 456 yards and 9 touchdowns as a senior. The 456 yards receiving is the third most ever totaled in one season by a Buccaneer receiver. His 9 receiving touchdowns ties him for second with Jordan Safer for most touchdown catches in a season. His 25.3 yards-per-catch in his senior season was tops on the team. He also scored on 50% of his catches, another remarkable accomplishment. His scoring catches came on pass plays of 38, 37, 68, 72, 5, 6, 27, 33, and 29 yards.
"I'm so proud of these guys ," said Covington coach Kevin Finfrock after both Reck and Hague signed to play for Ohio Dominican. "They've done a lot for our program. This is about them now and they deserve the attention they're getting."
So it goes for Reck and Hague as they make the transition to the next level. As they did four years ago when they walked on the Covington Buccaneers' practice field for the first time, they'll be starting over.
And, they'll be back in black.
