His friends and teammates kept John's memory alive with a #65 sticker on their helmets and dedicating their junior and senior seasons to him.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 - NATIONAL TRAIL
It took two days to complete the game, which was probably torture for the National Trail Blazers. The game started Friday night but was rescheduled after only 6 minutes of play.

The Buccs had already built up a 15-0 lead on a safety by Mike Molesky, a touchdown run by Boomer Schmidt and a fumble return by Matt Maier as Covington reached the end zone 8 times throughouit the contest.

The game was continued at 11am Saturday but the Trail Blazers would have had more fun staying home and watching Bugs Bunny. The Buccs jumped all over National Trail in the third quarter. Josh Burelison scored twice and Clint Mohler hauled in a nice pass from Dusty Blythe to give the Buccs a 34-0 lead.

By the end of the third, the Buccs had built a 42-0 lead as the reserves took over. Jesse Hitt and Mike Varno each added touchdown runs in the fourth. The Blazers did manage to put 16 points of their own on the board to avoid the shutout.

Covington racked up 352 yards of total offense to National Trail's 157 yards. The Buccs also dominated on the ground by accumulating 213 yards rushing.

Quarterback, Dusty Blythe was also efficient leading the Buccaneer passing attack with 139 yards on 9 of 14 passing for 2 touchdowns.

The Buccaneer defense continued to dominate as well by holding National Trail to just 3.2 yards per play.

The Buccs' 54-16 victory improves their record to 3-0 and 2-0 in the CCC. Next the Buccs renew their annual rivalry with Ansonia.

Big Man "Hess" Shines...
Dusty Hess has an intimidating presence, a solid work ethic and he's a dominating performer. Dusty Hess has all of these intangibles which will get him noticed as his high school career progresses.

He is the glue that holds the Buccs' defensive line together, taking on double and tripple-teams which allows teammates to make plays. Dusty has also made his share of plays even though he is the focus of opposing offensive lines.

As the begin playing some of the tougher teams in the CCC, Dusty's impact will become even more noticable.
