Thanks Covington Buccaneers and Ansonia Tigers! With everything that has been going on in the country this week, it was a pleasure to watch two great high school football teams put on a show like they did tonight. For a little over two hours you took our minds off of the tragic circumstances in the United States. Both teams should be commended for a very hard fought and hard hitting game.
As if the final score really matters in the grand scheme of things, the Buccs came out on top 27-13.
After a Dusty Blythe interception on the Buccs' first drive, Boomer Schmidt broke loose on a 30-yard run to put the Buccs up 7-0. Ansonia struck back after a Buccaneer fumble on a 55-yard screen pass that Stuart Beisner took down the sidelines to tie the game up at 7-7.
The Tigers appeared to be taking over the momentum in the second quarter until Jordan Shafer stepped in from of a Tiger pass and returned the ball to the 9. Boomer Schmidt capitalized on the opportunity by taking the ball in from the 2 to give the Buccs a halftime lead of 13-7.
The second half continued to be a dogfight but the Buccs were able to add some cushion on two more Boomer Schmidt touchdown runs to go up 27-7. Ansonia would not go away, however, as Biesner reached the endzone again to make the score 27-13 but time finally ran out on Ansonia. The Buccs walked away with the victory on the scoreboard but both teams were winners tonight.
Covington recorded 13 first downs on 366 yards of total offense with 334 yards coming on the ground.
Ansonia managed 212 yards of offense and 9 first downs.
The win puts the Buccs in good position to make a strong run at the CCC title. At 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the CCC, the Buccs are tied with Bethel and Anna at the top of the standings. The Buccs travel on the road to play both teams in the second half of the season. This was one major step in their quest to repeat as CCC Champions.
Tiger Killer...
It's becoming an annual event for Boomer Schmidt. Every time the Buccs battle Ansonia, number 42 has a big night.
It all started last year in the Buccs regular season matchup with the Tigers. Boomer was a terror on defense as he recovered a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown to break the game open. Then in the playoff matchup between the Buccs and Tigers, Boomer rushed for 156 yards and 1 touchdown.
Tonight was more of the same. Boomer was the Buccs' workhorse. He racked up the tough yards. Very rarely did one tackler bring him down. It usually took a group of Tigers to stop Boomer and even then he was always going forward.
The only stat that really matters is points and Boomer scored all of the Buccaneer touchdowns. He also had 176 yards of 26 carries.
