John Starry, a member of the class of 2002, passed away tragically as a result of an automibile accident in August of 2000. His friends and teammates kept John's memory alive with a #65 sticker on their helmets and dedicating their junior and senior seasons to him.

COVINGTON - It's been a trying week for everyone at Covington High School, and even more so for the Buccaneer football team.

Junior lineman, John Starry tragically lost his life on August 26th after battling injuries sustained in an unfortunate automibile accident a week before.

On the back of the Buccs bench for the rest of the season will be a number 65 jersey with John Starry's nameon the back. The Buccs will also wear a sticker of number 65 on their helmets and they have dedicated their season to him.

Prior to the game the Buccs gathered at midfield, held hands and released a single balloon with number 65 towards the sky. As it slowly floated away the players walked slowly to the sideline with tears in their eyes.

As the Buccs poured it on a hapless National Trail team the Buccs seemed to draw inspiration from each other.

Each touchdown they scored they stopped in the endzone and pointed to the sky. After each salute they celebrated with each other in the endzone and you could hear them shout out John Starry's name.

National Trail never stood a chance. They were playing a team that was playing above their capabilities.

The Buccs were playing for something other than a typical win.

They were playing for John.

The Buccs jumped all over National Trail in the first quarter as Clint Mohler hauled in a perfect Dusty Blythe pass from 33 yards out.

Mike Cope then broke loose from 55 yards out and there was no looking back for the Buccs.

Junior running back, Josh Burelison scored three touchdowns on runs of 14, 56 and 65 yards as the Buccs demolished National Trail, 45-0.

Covington improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCC with the win. The Buccs travel to face unbeaten Tri-County North next Friday.

The Buccaneers season began in early September with tragedy. Their friend and teammate was critically injured in an automobile accident before the season opener against Miami East. A week later, before their game against National Trail, John Starry passed away. The team dedicated the season to the memory of their teammate.

Sure, the Buccs had a great year in football terms. The year they had honoring their teammate was much more important. It goes beyond making plays, wins and losses. It's the way they conducted themselves on and off the field that was the true measure of their season dedication.

How can anybody forget the balloons they let float over the field with #65 on them?

How can anybody forget seeing Johns #65 jersey and helmet on the back of their bench facing the crowd?

How can anybody forget the emotional moment when the entire team escorted John's parents at Parent's Night?

This year's team left a lasting memory of #65 in the minds of Bucc fans. They used their stage to keep alive the memory of their teammate.
