On the surface a 47-0 win would appear to be impressive, but the Buccs won in a sloppy affair.

John Starry, a member of the class of 2002, passed away tragically as a result of an automibile accident in August of 2000. His friends and teammates kept John's memory alive with a #65 sticker on their helmets and dedicating their junior and senior seasons to him.

UNION CITY - Thirteen penalties would usually destroy any hope for victory and drive coaches crazy. Especially when three of the penalties negated touchdowns.

The Buccs got away with their mistakes against a gutsy, but outgunned Mississinawa Valley team that is yet to win a game.

The Buccs sported a balance running game as Josh Burelison and Boomer Schmidt both broke the 100-yard barrier.

Mike Cope chipped in 89 yards and 2 touchdown on only 5 carries. One of Copes touchdowns came on a 59-yard run as he broke three tackles and outran the secondary to the endzone.

Boomer schmidt also recorded 2 touchdowns, one coming on a 52-yard run.

The Buccs offense also moved the ball through the air.

Dusty Blythe completed 11 out of 15 passes for 130 yards without throwing an interception.

Even though the Buccs won 47-0, the 13 penalties the Buccs racked up and the loss of Brady Reck for the season is cause for concern to the Buccs' coaching staff.

Covington improves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCC, while Mississinawa Valley drops their record to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Covington returns home next week against Arcanum.

The Buccaneers season began in early September with tragedy. Their friend and teammate was critically injured in an automobile accident before the season opener against Miami East. A week later, before their game against National Trail, John Starry passed away. The team dedicated the season to the memory of their teammate.

Sure, the Buccs had a great year in football terms. The year they had honoring their teammate was much more important. It goes beyond making plays, wins and losses. It's the way they conducted themselves on and off the field that was the true measure of their season dedication.

How can anybody forget the balloons they let float over the field with #65 on them?

How can anybody forget seeing Johns #65 jersey and helmet on the back of their bench facing the crowd?

How can anybody forget the emotional moment when the entire team escorted John's parents at Parent's Night?

This year's team left a lasting memory of #65 in the minds of Bucc fans. They used their stage to keep alive the memory of their teammate.
