2000 BUCCANEER LINKS
John Starry, a member of the class of 2002, passed away tragically as a result of an automibile accident in August of 2000. His friends and teammates kept John's memory alive with a #65 sticker on their helmets and dedicating their junior and senior seasons to him.

TROY - Despite 41-6 loss to Marion Local Friday Night, the 2000 Covington Buccaneers had a season to remember. They went undefeated in the regular season, won the Cross County Conference Title and were Region 24 Runner-Up. They provided the town of Covington plenty of excitement and made their fans proud.

After the painful defeat to a very good Flyers team a few of the Buccaneer Seniors stayed on the field well after most of Troy Memorial Stadium was empty. They sat in the west endzone and sobbed knowing it was their last game in a Buccaneer uniform. Their pain was evident and it made you feel for the guys who put forth so much effort to get to this point. In time the pain will subside and they will have time to reflect on what they accomplished this year.

The eight seniors, Marc Hitt, Andy Hitt, Mike Cope, Bubby Bubeck, Jeremy Robinson, Dan Burgess, Josh Reck and Doug Apple have left a legacy for their younger teammates to follow. They left their mark in Covington football history. They were a part of two CCC Championship teams, two playoff teams and a total record of 21-3 their last two years.

One loss won't erase all they have done and the memories they have left.

The Buccaneers season began in early September with tragedy. Their friend and teammate was critically injured in an automobile accident before the season opener against Miami East. A week later, before their game against National Trail, John Starry passed away. The team dedicated the season to the memory of their teammate.

Sure, the Buccs had a great year in football terms. The year they had honoring their teammate was much more important. It goes beyond making plays, wins and losses. It's the way they conducted themselves on and off the field that was the true measure of their season dedication.

How can anybody forget the balloons they let float over the field with #65 on them?

How can anybody forget seeing Johns #65 jersey and helmet on the back of their bench facing the crowd?

How can anybody forget the emotional moment when the entire team escorted John's parents at Parent's Night?

This year's team left a lasting memory of #65 in the minds of Bucc fans. They used their stage to keep alive the memory of their teammate.
