John Starry, a member of the class of 2002, passed away tragically as a result of an automibile accident in August of 2000. His friends and teammates kept John's memory alive with a #65 sticker on their helmets and dedicating their junior and senior seasons to him.

ANSONIA - The Buccs have had a bitter taste in their mouths for over a year. Whenever someone mentioned Ansonia, one though came to mind...two yards short.

That's how close the Buccs came to sending last year's playoff game against the Tigers into overtime as time expired. Ansonia was able to stop the Buccs short of a touchdown and knock the Buccs out of the playoffs with a 14-7 defeat on their home field.

One year later, Covington didn't forget.

The two top teams in the CCC played on of all days, "Friday the 13th". There wasn't any bloodshed but there was a massacre and Ansonia was on the receiving end 31-7.

For the exception of one big return on special teams, the Buccs totally dominated Ansonia in all phases of the game.

On offense, the Buccs gained 262 yards rushing, more than doubling Ansonia's output of 105 yards on the ground.

The Buccs defense also outscored the Ansonia offense 7 to 0 on Mike Cope's 54-yard third quarter interception return for a touchdown.

The victory was a sense of revenge for the Buccs considering Ansonia knocked the Buccs out of the playoffs in last year's dramatic 14-7 victory in Covington when the Buccs failed to score from inside Ansonia's two with seconds left in the game.

Next for the 8-0 Buccaneers is a third straight road game at Cedarville and the season grudge match in Covington against Bradford.

A win over Bradford will lock up the CCC title for good and should send the Buccs to the playoffs for the second straight year.

Maybe Ansonia will be waiting.

The Buccaneers season began in early September with tragedy. Their friend and teammate was critically injured in an automobile accident before the season opener against Miami East. A week later, before their game against National Trail, John Starry passed away. The team dedicated the season to the memory of their teammate.

Sure, the Buccs had a great year in football terms. The year they had honoring their teammate was much more important. It goes beyond making plays, wins and losses. It's the way they conducted themselves on and off the field that was the true measure of their season dedication.

How can anybody forget the balloons they let float over the field with #65 on them?

How can anybody forget seeing Johns #65 jersey and helmet on the back of their bench facing the crowd?

How can anybody forget the emotional moment when the entire team escorted John's parents at Parent's Night?

This year's team left a lasting memory of #65 in the minds of Bucc fans. They used their stage to keep alive the memory of their teammate.
