If the 1973 team is not considered the best football team Covington has ever had, they are at least ranked among the top five teams.
The 1952, 1960, 1968, and 1979 are four other teams worthy of the clain to fame, but the 1973 team has an aura of dominance all to its own.
Consider, the '73 Buccs recorded a school record 8 shutouts, a feat that may never be duplicated. They only surrendered 24 points all year, all coming to Tipp City and Graham. They scored 365 points on the year, averaging 35.6 points per game. This all came in a perfect 10-0 season.
Storries upon storries have been told about the '73 team and passed down through the years. Like how the offensive line had opponents so frightened they would have to run four or five yards downfield just to hit someone.
So, in 2003, when the coaches and high school administration decided to honor the 1973 team at a home game against Bradford, it was no surprise Smith Field was packed.
Throughout the 2003 season, the Buccaneers wore a patch on their uniforms with a commemorative thirty year anniversary logo. Prior to the game the commemorative logo was also painted on the field in honor of the occasion.
Then, each member of the 2003 Buccaneers lined on the sideline in front of the hometown fans and knelt down on one knee to recognize the '73 team as they were introduced one by one. As each member of the great team of thirty years ago was introduced, a current Buccaneer player met them at mid-field and presented them with a reproduced team photo.
"This is a special night for our kids," said coach Kevin finfrock. "We had the team watch film this morning of the 1973 team and the kids were amazed at how big and dominating they were. The kids were in awe and it really inspired the kids to play well."
The 2003 version of the Buccs went out and played like the Buccs of thirty years ago. They dominated Bradford for a 46-0 win to extend their unbeaten streak to 9-0.
