The 1952 team was the first Covington football team to finish with a perfect record at 9-0, but the 1960 team did them one better by becoming the first team in school history to finish 10-0. The 1960 Buccs also became the first team to be named State Champions, an honor designated by the UPI.
The 1960 Buccs started off the season with a 42-13 win over Tipp City. The 13 points surrendered to the Red Devils was the most they allowed the rest of the season.
Over the next five weeks the Buccs recorded five straight shutouts, a school record at the time. They started their streak by thrashing Northwestern 44-0 and followed that up with a 56-0 shellacking of Tecumseh.
In week four the Buccs extended their shutout streak to three straight with a 54-0 win over Carlisle. Germantown became shutout victum number four the following week, 50-0.
The Buccs' fifth straight shutout came at the expense of a very talented Versailles team 60-0 in week six.
Miami East broke the shutout streak in the seventh week of the season, but the Buccs reamined unbeaten with a 68-6 destruction of the Vikings.
Week eight was billed as the "Battle of the Unbeatens" by the Dayton papers as the Buccs took on rival Bradford. Unfortunately for the Railroadrers, they suffered the worse shellacking handed out by the powerful Buccaneers, 80-0.
Covington finished out their perfect season with a 60-6 win over Stivers and then a 62-8 destruction of a much larger school, Centerville.
On the season the Buccs scored 564 points, a record which stands 44 years later. The closest any Buccaneer team has come to approaching the record was in 2001, when the Buccs scored 483 points in 11 games.
Defensively the 1960 team only surrendered a total of 33 points on the season. Only the 1973 and 1965 teams have ever given up less points in a ten-game season.
For their domination, the 1960 team became the first team ever to be inducted into the Covington High School Athletic Hall of Fame on February 7, 2004, nearly 44 later.
"The 1960 team established the standard by which all teams are judged at Covington High School," said Bob Hueslman at the induction ceremony.
